Satisfying Your Hunger With Hummus

15 years ago the hummus industry was worth only five million dollars. Today, however, it is the market leader in refrigerated flavored spreads. Why the sudden uproar for a food that has been around since the 13th century? With current health trends starting in America, hummus dips are being recognized as a healthy choice since they contain no saturated fat or cholesterol. Whether you are looking for roasted garlic hummus dip or tahini hummus dip, you may be satisfied with what you discover.

The base ingredient used in hummus is the chick pea, which was first cultivated around 7,000 years ago. The chick peas are generally blended together with ingredients such as tahini and lemon juice. Depending on which flavor you desire, the dip may also contain vegetables such as garlic or peppers. Hummus dips are considered to be fairly easy to make, but buying them already packaged is considered to be more convenient. Hummus is commonly eaten by spreading it on bread for sandwiches or dipping pita bread and vegetables in it. Although hummus dips are just gaining popularity in the United States, hummus has been a common food in the Middle East for years.

The hummus craze started in the United States after the Lebanese Civil war ended in 1990. Armenians migrated to California after 1990, and with them came hummus. It integrated quickly into American culture, as by 2010 there was a reported 300 million dollars in sales of hummus. America has been known to embrace exotic and healthy foods, and hummus fits both categories.

Hummus, being rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and low in fat and cholesterol, has gained widespread popularity in America. There are many different variations of the recipe, and they are available for purchase in stores. Depending on if you like plain hummus or a variety with roasted vegetables, finding hummus dips that you enjoy is easier now than it was 20 years ago. Helpful info also found here: sabra.com

  1. How easy is it to make and does it take long? I really want to make some for my sons graduation party but I do not think buying a bunch of containers in the store fits into my budget. Plus I want to make it the way he likes it.

  2. I have made hummus before and it didnt take me longer than 15 minutes. of course I already had all the ingredients on hand and didnt add anything fancy to it, but really all you gotta do is blend it and it is done, you should have no problem.
